Include People In Your Group

The year is starting to fly by, we just passed Valentine’s Day. At this time of year, many schools have activities that children exchange valentines cards with each other. It is important to include people in your group. When each child receives a card it works out great. When someone is left out, it’s not so great. Have you ever been that person left out of the group? Humans are designed to be in groups so they feel the need to fit into one.

People, especially young ones, need to feel accepted. When you include someone into your group, you give them that acceptance – even if it is just for a conversation.

Find a Place That Includes People

Everyone, consciously or subconsciously, tries to find their place. If you are an adult and you have been at the same job for several years, you may have found yours. If you are a second grader who just moved to a new school, you may not have. While you are searching, or even after you are finished here are a few things to remember:

  • Include people in your group – whether you are searching or if you have found a place, be inclusive not exclusive.
  • Do not compromise who you are just to fit in. Be accepted for who you are or find a new place. (That does not mean be a jerk, it means don’t compromise what you believe is right just to fit in)
  • Introduce yourself to new people, help them feel welcome – Be an acquaintance not a stranger.

Keep Trying

Sometimes finding a place to be included, especially as an adult, takes some trial and error. You may have to try a few places. But keep trying. Are you uncomfortable at the gym? Was crossfit not your thing? Hot yoga just too hot? Even if you have never considered yourself a “martial arts person” you you may find that you like you like it. If you are looking for your place and want to give our place a try, feel free to schedule a trial class. We like to meet new people.
